The Older Child and Transition from Kindergarten to School

The Six-Year-Old Child

The situation of the oldest children in kindergarten is of vital interest worldwide. In many countries, government authorities are requiring that academic instruction and school entrance begin at younger and young ages. In countries where mixed-age kindergartens include both younger and older children, it becomes increasingly challenging to meet the needs of these oldest children.

This IASWECE working group is studying the development of the young child at this threshold phase of early childhood, and working to develop ever better ways to meet their needs in the context of the individual kindergarten group and in the context of the wider debate on school entrance.
